Tools that search, read and summarize sources, with citations you can check.

Updated October 2026

Ranking criteria

Citation reliability, source coverage (web or scientific papers), ability to work with your own documents and free tier.

Ranking

  1. #1

    Perplexity

    Perplexity AI

AI search engine that answers questions with cited sources, with a deep research mode and a choice of models.

Why it ranks here: Best everyday search-with-citations experience, fast and with a free tier.

  2. #2

Google's research notebook, formerly NotebookLM, that answers only from the sources you upload (PDFs, sites, videos), creates audio overviews and now runs code for data analysis.

Why it ranks here: Best for studying and working with your own documents, with answers grounded in your sources; free to start (renamed from NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in Jul/2026).

  3. #3

    Elicit

    Elicit

Academic research assistant that finds papers, extracts data into tables and supports systematic reviews.

Why it ranks here: Most complete for scientific literature reviews; narrow focus if you don't work with papers.

  4. #4

    Consensus

    Consensus

Search engine that answers questions from peer-reviewed papers and shows the level of scientific consensus.

Why it ranks here: Great for quickly checking what science says on a topic; fewer analysis features than Elicit.

  5. #5

    Semantic Scholar

    Ai2 (Allen Institute for AI)

Free scientific literature search engine from Ai2, with over 200 million papers, AI-generated TLDR summaries, recommendations of new papers (Research Feeds) and a reader that shows citation details inline in the text.

Why it ranks here: It's completely free and covers over 200 million papers, always linked to the source, but it doesn't generate synthesized answers like Elicit and Consensus, the official site doesn't mention uploading your own PDFs and the focus is on English-language publications.

  6. #6

    Scite

    Scite (Research Solutions)

Research assistant that uses “Smart Citations” to show whether later studies supported, contested or merely mentioned a paper, always linking back to the source.

Why it ranks here: Answers anchored in real papers and a huge citation base, but there's no free plan (only a 7-day trial) and the entry price is annual.

  7. #7

    Undermind

    Undermind

Scientific literature search assistant that reads and evaluates hundreds of papers per question, follows citation trails and delivers reports with inline citations that lead back to the source paper.

Why it ranks here: It has a free plan and every statement links back to the source paper, but the official site doesn't say which paper databases it searches or the monthly-billing price (only US$16/month billed annually).

  8. #8

    Scholarcy

    Scholarcy

Tool that summarizes academic articles and documents into “flashcards”, extracting findings, methods, data and references, with a browser extension.

Why it ranks here: Speeds up reading papers with structured summaries, but plan prices weren't accessible on the official page and full features are paid.
